The former rectory, which is the main building of the museum, houses most of the museum’s exhibitions. There you can learn about the prehistory of Pielavesi, the local handcraft traditions and different aspects of human life, from birth to death and from everyday life to celebration. The main building’s room is decorated in early twentieth century style, with men’s and women’s halves. In addition to the room, the building has three chambers. In the largest chamber, there is an exhibition entitled “Aenahan se joutilaalla jottae tietättää”, which shows the different stages of human life in the past. In the second chamber there is an exhibition “Suanut suappaat pittää, köydä käöp ilimannii”, which tells about the work of Pielavesi leather workers and shoemakers and the history of shoemaking. The chamber in the back is decorated as a chamber of an early 20th century parsonage and tells the history of the Pielavesi congregations. The exhibitions in the main building were made in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
In addition to the old rectory, a fish-hut and a smoke cottage are open for the museum visitors. The fish-hut is the oldest building in the museum area, because it dates from 1746. According to its name, the hut has been a fish and game-hut. Its exhibition on fishing was completed in 2004. The first building of the museum is the birchbark roofed smoke cottage. It was donated by the village of Laukkala and is decorated in the style of the old smoke cottage of the past.
